Journey’s ‘Separate Ways’ Gets A Rocked Up Cover
As a kid of the 1980’s, I get really nervous when I hear that someone has covered a classic 80’s tune. Journey is a hard one to cover, because the band is sacred to those of us who grew up in the 70’s and 80’s. But I will tell you that the Chris Daughtry/Lizzy Hale cover of Journey’s ‘Separate Ways’ kicks ass!
Both Daughtry and Hale are stellar singers on their own. Daughtry has his own band and Lizzy and her brother started Halestorm, and released their first album in 2009. Although I have not seen Daughtry live, I have seen Halestorm a few times and they do not disappoint! Lizzy’s voice is amazing!
So with two strong singers, I was concerned that their voices may not blend well on this song. I was wrong! Because both singers voices are strong, the cover is tremendous! The song is definitely a bit more rockin’ than the original, but yet it stays true to the Journey favorite.
It’s been 40 years since Journey released ‘Separate Ways’, which pains me to type! How am I that old?! UGH! So since it’s been since 1983 since Journey released their ‘Frontiers’ album and the song, it’s probably time for a kickin’ cover.
I know that people are serious when it comes to Steve Perry and Journey, but I think Hale and Daughtry do the song justice. And it doesn’t hurt that they’re both so damn pretty! It’s a strong cover! See what you think!
