Some New Homes Now Have ‘Package Doors’ And I Love It
The last time I built a house was over 10 years ago. Things have changed so much since then! New homes now have some amazing features, and this may be one of the best. According to In The Know, a realtor in Georgia is showing folks on TikTok a new home feature that every online shopper needs: Package areas.
Lexi Blevins, @lexi_blevins on TikTok, sells real estate in Atlanta. There’s a video on her page showing what’s called a ‘package door’. These doors are trending and folks building homes are adding them to their plans.
The ‘package door’ is a door that is accessible to delivery people from the outside. In between the ‘package door’ and the front or back door of the house is a small area for deliveries. Delivery people can open the ‘package door’ without having access to the home. The area where the packages are left are technically in the home so they’re safe from rain, snow, or porch pirates. It’s brilliant!
If you’re like me and order lots of stuff online, this is a great idea. The ‘package door’ is locked, but delivery folks will have the access code in order to leave your things. Your stuff is safe from thieves and the weather. I order a ton of stuff on Amazon, so I think this is an amazing idea.
Since the pandemic, the percentage of people that order things online has increased greatly. With the increase of online shopping, porch piracy has also gone up. According to a report by SafeWise, roughly 260 million packages were stolen in 2022. Crazy!
People on TikTok have mixed reviews about the idea. Some think it’s a smart idea, while others think it can still lead to theft. If I was building a new home, I would definitely include a ‘package door’. You can see how it works in the video below.
