‘QuitTok’ Is A Now A Popular Trend But It May Not Be Smart
Many years ago, my mom told me that being fired from a job builds character. I’ve only been fired once in my life from a retail job. And once in radio I was laid-off due to corporate cuts. I was rehired three months later though. It can be stressful! Now some folks who have been fired are taking to social media to vent, but it may not be a smart idea.
According to CBS News, disgruntled workers are leaving and complaining about their former workplace on TikTok. Experts are calling it ‘loud quitting’ and say discussing grievances on the social media platform may hurt your chances of getting another job. HR professionals also say it’s not smart.
‘QuitTok’ is a way for people to make employers accountable by calling them out publicly. This may turn off future employers. Many businesses will check out your social media pages prior to hiring you.
In radio, and in other professions, many employees have a non-compete agreement. This will stop a person from leaving one job and going directly to a competitor within the same city. If you signed a contract at your current place of employment, there may be a clause prohibiting you from discussing your termination publicly. All that aside, if you’re thinking of staying in the same profession in the same city, companies may not hire you if you’ve slammed your former company on social media.
I understand being angry after being fired, but it may be smarter to have some drinks with your friends and vent than to do it on social media. Even if you’re thinking of switching professions, the next company you work for may check out your socials. ‘QuitTok’ may get your views, but if may stop you from being hired. Be smart!
