A Beach Day Can Be Good For Your Skin As Well As Your Mood
The beach is the one place I can fully relax. Hearing the ocean soothes my soul. Dermatologists are saying that a day at the beach is not only good for your mood, it can also be good for your skin. Currently there are lots of TikTok videos saying that the ocean salt water is good for acne and other skin problems. I say it’s true and so do many doctors.
According to Huffington Post, Dermatologist Dr. Jennifer Holman says that she’s seen patients that have positive results from salt water. Folks with inflammatory skin issues or acne are seeing positive results from spending time in the ocean.
Here are a few reasons the beach is good for you:
- There are minerals in ocean water that could be good for the skin – Depending on your skin type and the condition of the water, minerals like magnesium, potassium, calcium and zinc that are found in the water can help reduce inflammation. It may also be helpful for skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis.
- It’s exfoliating – The salt in the sea water, as well as the sand at the beach, can exfoliate your skin. This gets rid of rough skin, leaving you with brighter and smoother skin.
- Lower stress levels and light therapy help, too – When you’re at the beach, you tend to be less stressed. Stress can cause skin conditions to be worse, so when your less stressed, you skin is better. The sun may also be beneficial, as UV light exposure helps skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis, according to experts.
- But there can be some downsides – If you don’t wash saltwater off of your skin, it can be irritating and drying. And if you have sensitive skin, the combination of sun, wind, salt and sand can be a problem, so be sure to rinse off all residue after your fun in the sun.
Now that I’m older, I don’t see as much acne on my skin. Growing up, I always had oily skin, and the ocean water and sun would help to dry it out. Obviously, the sunshine is great for your body, but too much sun can cause issues. Sunscreen is still a must!
As a teen, I’d get really dark without sunscreen. Now, my skin is way more sensitive to the sun. Usually, I’ll go without sunscreen on my face for an hour or so and then put on special sunscreen for your face only. Normal sunscreen causes my face to break out. And I always make sure I get some salt water on my face at least once a day. I see a difference in my complexion after some ocean water and sunshine.
I suffer from large pores, on my face and back, so I do try to let the saltwater help my skin before sunscreen. However, I don’t go long without it! I burn more easily now than I did when I was a teenager. I’m sure it’s a combination of getting older and stronger UV rays.
If you’re hitting the beach for the long 4th of July weekend, make sure to give your skin some sea salt and some vitamin D. But make sure you protect your skin with sunscreen. And turn so you don’t burn!
Ocean water is often touted as a cure-all for skin problems like acne, eczema and even wound-healing. https://t.co/KJV2q0BTJb
