Women Dealing With Menopause: This Video Is Everything And I Love It
Menopause isn’t something lots of women like to discuss. It’s one of those things that all women deal with, but I think there’s still some ‘shame’ when you’re going through it. There are so many different symptoms, and you deal with different ones, depending on who you are. When I first started going through symptoms, in my mid to late 40’s, my doctor dismissed me. Without doing any tests, she just decided I was ‘too young’ to be dealing with menopausal issues. And this is a female doctor!
Not to share too much, but I started my period at the age of 10. I had no idea what was happening! This was in 1980, so information wasn’t as accessible as it is now. My parents hadn’t talked to me about it yet. I guess no one figured I’d start so young. I’m sharing this because when I went to my doctor with menopausal symptoms, I was floored when she just looked at my age and dismissed me. I mean, starting my period at 10 and dealing with menopause issues in my late 40’s made sense to me.
When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I had to have my IUD removed. My cancer is hormone generated, so any added estrogen was out for me. I was 51, and when my doc removed my IUD and did some tests, she told me I was post-menopausal. Now this is the same doc that told me three years earlier that I couldn’t be going through menopause because I was ‘too young’. Once she told me I was post-menopausal, I had to make a smart-ass comment. I told her, ‘I TOLD you I was dealing with menopause!’ I hate when doctors dismiss you like you’re crazy! UGH!
I am sharing all this because yesterday two of my girlfriends, living on different parts of the country, sent me the same video on Instagram. The video is by @ginge_unhinged, Victoria Hardy, and she nails the menopause experience in about 2 minutes! She’s the author of the book ‘My Menopause My Journal My Rules‘. I don’t have the book, but I’m getting it.
Menopause is like this thing you’re supposed to keep in the closet. It’s ‘unladylike’ to talk about. Which is total BS! It’s a life changing event and it can cause chaos to your life. We should talk about it so that we don’t feel so badly about ourselves. There are so many issues that happen, and you don’t know how to deal with them.
ALL THE DAMN MENOPAUSAL SYMPTOMS
The thing about menopause is that it’s a freakin’ mystery. There are so many symptoms and going through them is a ruckus! One of the things that really hit me when watching her video is the low self-esteem and the RAGE! Now, I’ve always had a temper and some anger issues, but now it’s crazy. I’ll snap quick about some silly stuff. Last week a dude cut me off, just drove into my lane and I had to slam on my brakes. I beeped my horn, and he flipped me off. I was ready to pull over and fight! LOL! The rage is unlike anything I’ve dealt with. It’s totally unreasonable and you don’t know how to control it.
Of course, the sweats are a whole other ordeal. They happen to me not only at night, but during the day. I can be sitting at home on a Saturday morning, and boom! Sweats! There’s no rhyme or reason! My poor dogs try and get into the sunlight as much as possible because I think I’m making them cold with the air conditioning on full blast.
Most women are taking hormones to control the symptoms of menopause. Unfortunately, I can’t do that. Due to my cancer being hormone generated, I’m not allowed to have hormones. So I’m out here trying to deal with all the damn symptoms solo. The depression, weight gain, rage, sweats, and all the other crap that just suddenly appears. If you’re dealing with menopause, this video will make you feel seen. You’re not alone! I need to start a BBC…a bitter bitch club so that those of us who are in our 50’s can rant about all the stuff we’re going through. LOL! Getting older is a damn challenge!
