These Are The Most Triggering Phrases In America
Have you ever said something you regretted? Maybe you did, and it came from a place of stress or anger. A study from Preply looked into exactly how stress-induced communication can cause problems. Their study even shows the most triggering phrase in America.
They surveyed 1,000 people on their experiences with stress and its impact on communication.
The language and tutor platform found that 80% of people say that their tone becomes more hurtful when stressed. Also found is when stress levels rise, 87% confess to using language they later regret.
What are the most triggering phrases?
Many phrases leave some people’s stomachs in knots. And the top trigger phrase for 65% of people is “I have some bad news.” Closely behind this phrase is “We need to talk,” with 63% and “I expected more from you,” (57%).
Language in the workplace.
In the workplace, certain phrases said in the moment of stress stand out for their “regrettable impact.” Topping the list for the most regretted phrase at work is “I don’t care.” According to the study, 36% of people regret saying this in a professional setting.
Following behind are other stress-induced phrases such as “Not my job,” and “This is a waste of time.” These phrases are regretted by 29% and 24% of people.

On the other hand, certain phrases can come across as more soothing. “We’ll figure it out” tops the list of most calming phrases. According to the survey, 68% of people find solace in those words. This phrase is followed by “We can handle this,” (58%) and “I’m here for you,” (56%).
Instead of using these triggering phrases, Preply language expert Sylvia Johnson says that “the key is to approach the situation with empathy, transparency, and a commitment to support. The language you use is critical, so use words that inspire calmness and clarity.”
