20-Year-Old Is Living In The 1980’s And I Think It’s Totally Awesome
I miss the 80’s. I miss the clothes, the movies, the music, and the carefree fun. My teenage years were in the 80’s and my memories of those years are some of my best. In 1982, I was 12 years old, and that’s when I met some of my best friends, that I’m still close with today. My 80’s girlfriends and I still take a yearly beach trip together and after 40 plus years we still giggle and have a blast together! There’s a 20-year-old girl that’s becoming a TikTok sensation for her love of the 1980’s and I am loving it!
According to Bored Panda, Jordan Rumsey is living her best 80’s life in 2024. She started her 80’s life when she was 17, not realizing how popular her social media content would become. Daily she’s dressing as we did in the 80’s, doing her hair as most of us did in the 80’s, and shopping at malls, which are hard to find now. Not sure if she’s using Aqua Net but seeing her ‘big hair’ my guess is yes!
As I was scrolling through her content, I saw a 1980’s Def Leppard poster on her wall and felt nostalgic. Def Leppard’s ‘Pyromania’ album was one of the first cassettes I had. To date, it’s still one of my favorite albums. I did rock radio for many years, and I can’t tell you how many times I’ve played ‘Photograph’ on-air. But I can tell you that every time I hear that song, I still turn it up and sing along.
Living Like The 80’s Isn’t Easy Now
Since Rumsey began her 80’s lifestyle in 2021 during high school, she was often bullied and picked on for being different. Any type of difference scares people, especially when you’re a teen. That type of confidence and independence can be threatening to others. Good for her for being herself and defying the ‘norms’. It seems to be paying off for the young lady as her TikTok page has over 700,000 followers.
One of the things that folks are loving on her social media accounts is her shopping videos. Rumsey goes to ‘dead’ malls and is recording herself in them while she’s shopping. If you grew up in the 80’s, malls were THE place to be! I worked at the mall here in Gastonia from 1985-1988, as did many of my friends. On a Friday or Saturday night, it didn’t even seem like you were working since so many of your friends would be at the mall.
Very few large malls around the country are poplar and thriving anymore. I know the mall in Gastonia is a dud now. Some malls are turning into apartments/condos, while still keeping that 80’s aesthetic, which is cool!
I’ll admit that in my life I keep the 80’s alive! The music I listen to outside of work is pretty much all 80’s metal and rock. In a month I’m going on the Monsters of Rock Cruise, which is a vacation packed with 80’s bands. Queensryche, Faster Pussycat, Quiet Riot, Slaughter, and Charlotte’s own Firehouse are just a few of the bands performing. I’m totally excited! I’m still a fan of all of that music, as well as 80’s movies like ‘Fast Times at Ridgemont High’ and ‘Spinal Tap’.
Looking at Rumsey’s social media accounts, she reminds me of a girl that would be the star in a John Hughes movie. Congrats to her for living how she wants and thanks to her for taking me down the road of nostalgia. The 1980’s ruled!
