Old School Journey Tune Now Best-Selling Song Of All Time
If you’re a Gen X’er then the headline is a giveaway. According to I Love Classic Rock, the RIAA has given Journey’s 1981 hit ‘Don’t Stop Believin” double diamond status. The tune has sold 20 million units, making it the best-selling song of all time. Those of us who grew up in the 1980’s aren’t shocked! In my opinion, this song is like the theme song for Gen X’ers.
The song, off Journey’s 1981 ‘Escape’ album, is a tune that almost all Gen X’ers know. In addition, when we hear the song, we must start singing the lyrics. We all KNOW them by heart! I’m 54 so they ‘Escape’ album was the soundtrack to my middle school years. It was the first album I ever had. Seeing Journey live in the 80’s was amazing! They were one of my first concerts!
Karaoke enthusiasts are still singing this song live in bars and clubs across the world. It’s a song that is a total earworm. When hearing the song, it stays in your head for the rest of the day. Hearing it at a baseball game, in the grocery store, or while driving in your car, ignites a sing-along. And it’s not just the Gen X’ers that sing it! The song is popular with those folks who are younger than us. It has amazing staying power.
43 Years And Still Going Strong
It’s been 43 years since Journey came out with their ‘Escape’ album. If you’re my age, that makes you cringe a bit. Not sure about your brain, but my brain still remembers so much of the 80’s. Remembering what I did last week is difficult for me, but I can still tell you that in 1983 when my middle school boyfriend John broke up with me, I’d cry in my room listening to ‘Open Arms’. LOL!
The 1980’s were an era like no other. Growing up then was amazing! MTV, no cell phones or internet, hanging out at Godfather’s Pizza or Pizza Hut, going to the movies with friends, and hanging out at the mall. We all still had insecurities and bad times, but things were so much simpler then. Hearing the song now brings a huge wave of nostalgia.
Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believin’ got a huge boost when the song’s popularity skyrocketed thanks to the show the ‘Sopranos’. Using the tune in the finale, the ‘Sopranos’ helped the song immensely.
Lead singer Steve Perry hasn’t been with the band in years, which is a total bummer. That said, current singer Arnel Pineda does an amazing job! No, it’s not the same as in the 80’s. Although seeing the band now, even without Perry, helps you flashback to those amazing times.
