Ice-T Shares Thoughts on Rap Beef and Social Media
Ice-T knows a thing or two when it comes to rap beef in the industry. He may be pretty laid back now, but he has seen himself in a few rap beefs in the past. But, it’s nothing like what rap beefs look like now in the world of social media.
The 66-year-old rapper and actor recently shared his thoughts on rap beef in the era of social media. He feels that in this time rap beefs have lost their true meaning, the music. Now, the beefs get amplified by things like social media and comments made by fans.
Ice-T Shares His Take on Rap Beef in Today’s Culture
“Hip-hop has always been competitive. So, saying I’m better than you is a part of hip-hop,” he said on Boss Talk 101. “The disses that’s going on, like, I can outrap you is one thing. But then when you take it to the next level, like, When I see you it’s a problem.”
He then goes on to discuss how a beef now can escalate so fast and no longer be just about you and the person or the music. Now, the risk of running into fans who are so in touch with someone and obsessed with them online then trickles into real life situations.
“Say I have beef with Treach and I’m talking sh*t about Treach. I could run into one of his fans on the street who wants to get active,” said Ice-T. He feels that a lot of the time the beef could have been settled and people could move on, but the moment it’s brought to social media it’s like there is no turning back when millions of people are now involved.
“Social media is an amplifier to everything. It amplifies everything… It forces a reaction that really could be squashed so much simpler. Now, why people have a problem and take it to social media is beyond me,” said Ice T.
In the past few months, there have been plenty of online beefs from female rappers to Drake vs. everybody, but the outlook on social media being a reason it amplifies isn’t new. Plenty of people wish things would leave the internet or not get brought there to include the rest of the world. What do you think of Ice-T’s take on this?
