Man Wears Retainer For 5 Years Not Aware It Was Removable
Now, if this story involved a young kid or even an older adult, I’d have some compassion. But the guy in this story is in his twenties so I think he should have known better.
When Matthew Watts turned 18 years old, he got his first retainer. Unfortunately, it didn’t come with instructions and I’m guessing the orthodontist didn’t explain things to him because he’s worn the retainer for over five years without removing it.
Watts apparently thought the orthodontist glued the retainer in his mouth and that it wasn’t removeable. So for the last five years, he’s had that thing in his mouth constantly. How did this guy not know it could come out? No one said anything to him? It took his boyfriend, Zane, to point out to him that the retainer was indeed removeable.
Now, Watts says the doctor “glued it in place” but I’ve never heard of that. I had braces and a retainer and the retainer was never glued in my mouth. In the video below, the retainer seems to come out of his mouth easily, so I’m not so sure about the glue story.
Again, how did this dude NOT know you could take a retainer out? The entire five or six years he’s had it in not once did someone mention it? I feel like this guy’s parents dropped the ball on some stuff. LOL!
The upside is Watts is know aware and he can clean that nasty retainer. I can’t imagine how gross that thing must be. UGH! Remember, when in doubt, take it out!
