Questlove To Direct ‘The Aristocats’ Live-Action Film
Disney has hired Questlove to direct a new version of a classic. The drummer is taking on the role of director once again after he won an Oscar for Best Documentary last year. Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson will be directing his first feature film with Walt Disney Studios for a live-action/hybrid remake of The Aristocats, per Deadline.
Sharing the news on Instagram yesterday (March 27), Questlove wrote: “They chose I to chase the cat… I basically have 2 life goals: 1. Don’t dismiss my dreams & 2. Get out of my own way.” Excited about the announcement, Anderson .Paak commented, “Where do I send my audition tape?” Ethan Hawke showed his support, commenting, “You will crush this.” Kate Hudson wrote: “Yes!!!” Ted Lasso‘s Hannah Waddingham shared her excitement, writing, “Ooof! Fabulous!” Comedian Reggie Watts wrote, “Maximum congrats man!!!!”
Disney didn’t just hire Questlove to direct. He will also be executive producing and overseeing the music. The film is based on the 1970 animated film about a family of Parisian cats who learn they are set to inherit a fortune from their owner. When the owner’s jealous butler kidnaps them and leaves them in the country, they must team up with a smooth-talking tomcat to try to make it back home before it’s too late.
The Roots’ founding member premiered his documentary, Summer of Soul at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. The subject of the doc revolved around the 1969 Harlem Cultural festival. The Harlem Cultural Festival brought over 300,000 people to celebrate African American music and culture and promoted Black pride.
The Aristocats animated film is currently streaming on Disney+.
