South Carolina City Ranks 3rd On The List of Allergy Capitals
Allergy season is here like it or not. The sneezing caused by North and South Carolina allergies is in full force. And honestly, who likes it? My car is covered in a nasty yellow coating of pollen. And without allergy medicine, there is no way I could have worn contacts today. We all have that friend who moved here from somewhere else and says they never had allergies until they moved here. So you know in the Carolinas they are worse than other places. But how bad? Well according to a study, in South Carolina allergies are some of the worst nationally. At least in a specific city.
And this isn’t just some random list based on Google search data or something like that. It’s from the true experts on the subject- the Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America. In this case, we are talking about “seasonal pollen allergies”. Seasonal pollen allergies are also often known as “hay fever”.
According to the Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America, these are the pollen season in the US:
- February – May: Trees (some start as early as December or January)
- April – June: Grasses
- July − November: Weeds
So if you happen to live in one of what the AAFA says are the top 2024 Allergy Capitals you may be suffering right now. And while we may not aspire to be, the Carolinas are well represented on this list. And in Greenville, South Carolina allergies are some of the worst nationwide with the city ranking 3rd overall.

- Wichita, Kansas
- Virginia Beach, Virginia
- Greenville, South Carolina
- Dallas, Texas
- Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
- Tulsa, Oklahoma
- Richmond, Virginia
- Des Moines, Iowa
- Raleigh, North Carolina
- Fayetteville, Arkansas
Not only is South Carolina on this list, but Raleigh, North Carolina as well. The list ranked 100 cities. Here is how North Carolina and South Carolina allergies in the other major cities ranked:
- Columbia, SC 15th
- Greensboro, NC 19th
- Charleston, SC 45th
- Winston-Salem, NC 47th
- Charlotte, NC 55th
- Durham, NC 62nd
So pretty much all areas of the states were represented. Interesting that there are three South Carolina cities in the top 50, while NC has more variance.
Rankings were based on factors like:
- Tree, grass, and weed pollen scores
- Over-the-counter allergy medicine use
- Availability of board-certified allergists/immunologists
