‘Beach Santa’ Is Committed To Cleaning Up The South Carolina Coastline
Don’t let anyone tell you there aren’t any good people left in the world. As long as folks like Howard Hogue walk the Earth, there’s still hope for all of us. The next time you visit a pristine beach in the Palmetto State, you may have him to thank. WCIV-TV reports that Hogue, a.k.a. “Beach Santa” due to his big white beard, has spent the past six years on a mission to clean up the South Carolina coastline.
A resident of Moncks Corner, South Carolina, Hogue drives about an hour south to work throughout the Charleston area. He says he’s motivated by a desire to improve the environment for future generations. Over the years, Hogue has taken part in more than 2-thousand beach sweeps. He has found all sorts of litter along the way, from brand new tools to fishing gear, scrap metal to cigarette butts. And lots and lots of plastic.
Celebrating ‘Beach Santa’
All of those litter sweeps have added up to an amazing milestone for “Beach Santa.” He recently picked up his one-millionth piece of trash. It happened on the Isle of Palms beach, east of Charleston. In recognition of his ongoing commitment, Hogue was awarded a plaque and celebrated with a party in his honor.
Howard Hogue’s story proves that it’s possible for one person to make a positive impact on the environment. His dedication isn’t just about keeping beaches free of litter and preserving natural habitats, but also serves as an inspiration for others to take responsibility. The man known as “Beach Santa” is a year-round Christmas gift to the state of South Carolina.
