“Jeopardy!” Champ Makes Powerful Statement About Cancer With Appearance
Rarely do I watch “Jeopardy!” but I love this story! Current “Jeopardy!” champ Christine Whelchel made a powerful statement on Monday’s show with a simple change in her appearance.
For her fourth appearance on the show Whelchel, a breast cancer survivor, decided to forgo the mid-length blonde wig she had been wearing to show off her nearly bald head. That takes guts!
When host Ken Jennings asked about the change, she replied, “After the winnings, I decided that I didn’t need to hide behind a wig anymore.” Whelchel went on to say that she wanted to normalize what cancer recovery looks like. According to Yahoo, Jennings congratulated her on her recovery and told her she looked fabulous.
I am grateful my breast cancer was detected early, and again I urge you all to get your yearly mammograms. They’re so important! My cancer treatment only required radiation, not chemo, so I didn’t lose my hair. But going through treatment, I met many women who have lost their hair. It’s easy to say it’s “just hair it’ll grow back” when it’s not you that’s losing it.
Cancer not only affects your body, it also affects your mind and confidence. My body is going through changes since I’m on an estrogen blocker. I kid that I’ll grow a beard soon. All I’m dealing with is hormonal changes and a now smaller left breast. Yes, they’re uneven and I have some scars, but I’m lucky I got to keep mine! Humor has helped me and seeing amazing people like Whelchel helps lots of us!
Folks on social media responded with support for Whelchel, praising her confidence and supporting her recovery. Whelchel has won a total of $73,602 on the show but she’s a winner in so many other ways!
Thank you to Christine Whelchel for helping so many women feel more comfortable in their recovery and congrats to her for being so strong! And I’m digging the short hair!
