Doctor Says He Hasn’t Showered In Five Years And Ewwww
There’s a doctor that says he hasn’t showered in in five years and thinks others should follow his lead. And I’m a little freaked out!
James Hamblin, MD, a physician and public health policy lecturer says we should all consider skipping showering for a few days, or years. According to bestoflifeonline.com, the doctor is the author of Clean: The New Science of Skin. He says that he doesn’t smell, but when he first stopped showering, he was a bit ‘ripe’.
Eventually, the doctor says your ecosystem reaches a steady state and you stop smelling bad. He says you don’t smell like roses but that the B.O. eventually goes away, and you just smell like a ‘person’.
And here’s where I have some issues. Despite the obvious reasons why not showering could be problematic, all people ‘smell’ different. So even though the doctor doesn’t ‘smell’, others might.
I realize that skin, like other areas of the human body, have microbes that are good and bad. An example is probiotics. I take them for gut health since I have a weakened immune system and often take antibiotics. I eat yogurt as well. Not as much as I should, but I eat it often. I get his premise that skin has good and bad microbes, and that showering can disrupt them. But when it’s 100 degrees here in the summer, I think showering is a must!
Admittedly, I don’t shower every day, especially in the winter. As I’ve gotten older, my skin is dryer and so is my hair. I also get rashes at times due to Lupus, so when I have a flair, I try not to dry my skin out too much. And I think all of us will skip a shower for a few days if we’re sick with the flu or something. But a shower feels good!
When I had spinal fusion surgery, I couldn’t shower for about two weeks. UGH! I did use baby wipes though. When I was able to shower, it was a wonderful feeling!
If you’re interested in the doctor’s findings and thoughts about showering, you can read more here. As for me, I’m gonna continue going with my daily or every other day cleaning routine.
He doesn't smell, we promise.https://t.co/X9JMWaZUMX
