A Woman Makes Lots Of Money As ‘Baby Namer’ For New Parents On TikTok
It’s shocking the things that people pay for. Apparently, I’m doing something wrong cause I can barely go out to eat, never mind spend over $200 an hour for someone to name my baby. However, that’s an actual job and a 33 year-old woman does and she started her business on TikTok.
According to Insider, Colleen Slagen is a mom and nurse practitioner, is building her dream business thanks to TikTok. Slagen is a ‘professional baby namer’ and she helps parents choose names for their kids. Her business is backed by data and decades of experience, according to her.
Slagen says even as a little girl, she was naming babies. In elementary school, she says she would go through yearbooks and phonebooks, dreaming up fake families, and naming them all. She would also write her favorite names in a journal.
So far, Slagen has completed over 100 orders she’s received, and you’ll be waiting at least six-weeks for her services. However, you can pay extra for rush delivery. So how much does a baby namer cost?
Prices for Slagen’s services start at $250 for a consultation. If you’re like me and wondering how the picking of a name happens, she is explaining on her TikTok page. On TikTok, Slagen explains to her 47,000 followers her process.
A couple told Slagen they were having a girl, and were looking for ‘a hot girl name with CEO energy’. They also wanted the name to compliment their other daughter’s name, which is Spencer. In addition, they didn’t want a two syllable name and didn’t want a name ending with an ‘n’.
‘Sloane’ was the top name that Slagen recommended. Her other suggestions were Conley and Elliot. So far, no info from the parents on the name they are planning to choose.
Slagen isn’t relying on her personal expertise alone. She also relies on the Social Security’s annual list of the most popular baby names. Phil and I have gone through some of these before. Personally, I would think you’d want to stay away from the ‘popular’ names so you’re child can stand out.
I think names are a bit like tattoos; they should mean something to the family and/or parents. My grandfather passed away before I was born. His name was Manny. In Jewish culture, you can only name a child after a relative after they’ve passed away. So in honor of my grandfather, my parents named me Melany. The spelling is with a ‘y’ as his name was spelled with a ‘y’.
