1970’s Easy Dessert Recipe Is Going Viral Thanks To TikTok And I Must Try It
If you’re a Gen X’er, you may have had this dessert as a kid. Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s, I never saw this dessert served at any of my friend’s houses nor did we ever have it. But after seeing how this cake is made, I must try it asap!
According to Mashed, Ice Cream Bread is the vintage dessert we all need to try and it’s making the rounds on TikTok. The recipe was found in a cookbook called ‘Cook Book’ from 1974. Crafty name! @bdylanhollis on TikTok recently shared the recipe and it’s going viral. After looking online, I discovered that B. Dylan Hollis is a popular social media personality and baker. He specializes in baking vintage American recipes. He has over 10 million followers on TikTok, so his creations must be good!
Doing a bit more research, I discovered that Hollis has a cookbook that I may need to snag. It’s called ‘Baking Yesteryear; the best recipes from 1800-1980’s’. The recipes in the book are all old-school and some of them sound odd but interesting. For example, he whips up a 1950’s recipe called ‘Tomato Soup Cake’. My interest is peaking so I gotta get the book!
Making The Cake
Ok, back to the dessert. The 1970’s recipe going viral is called ‘Ice Cream Bread’. The recipe made a comeback in 2005, and now with social media, it’s having another moment. The recipe is very easy: ice cream and flour. You use two pints of ice cream, softened, and mix it with a cup and a half of flour. Top with sprinkles, or not, and bake.
How does this work? Well, Hollis explains that ice cream is made of milk, eggs, and sugar, which are the ingredients you use to make a sweet bread. Makes sense! When making the dessert on TikTok, Hollis uses vanilla ice cream, but you can use any flavor. If sprinkles aren’t your thing, you can use fruit, nuts, or whatever you’d like.
I love ice cream cake, and ice cream on top of cake is yummy, so this recipe must be good! Of course, now that I’ve been made aware of this treat, I must make it this weekend! I’ll let you know how it comes out. I’m thinking strawberry ice cream would be great for this cake. Sweet but still summer-esque.
@bdylanhollis It’s baking season so you need to make this #cooking #vintage #baking #icecream
