The 3 Most Popular Cocktails In North Carolina And South Carolina
We may not agree on much these days in America, but there are still a few things that bring us together. One of them for those of us 21 and older is enjoying a well-crafted cocktail. Then again, we may not agree on which mixed drink is the best. Luckily, there’s a new list of the most popular cocktails to help us sort through that.
Because National Cocktail Day is Sunday, March 24th, the folks at BetCarolina.com wanted to see to see which mixed drink was the favorite in each state. BetCarolina.com referred to VinePair’s 50 Most Popular Cocktails of 2023 as a starting place for the research. Then they used Google Trends volume for the search term “Cocktail” from January 1 to March 15, 2024 for their list of the most popular cocktails in each state.
The Carolinas’ Most Popular Cocktails
In North Carolina, the most popular cocktails are three classics:
- Old Fashioned – Rye or bourbon (brandy in Wisconsin), sugar cube, Angostura bitters, thick cube of ice, orange twist.
- Manhattan – Rye, sweet vermouth, two dashes of Angostura, garnished with a brandied cherry.
- Martini – Gin and dry vermouth with a lemon twist or a few olives.
Those choices are much in line with the overall picks across America, except that the Manhattan is overwhelmingly the top choice in the most states, while the Old Fashioned comes in second. I love a good Old Fashioned. South Carolina deviates a little more from the national norm with one of its choices. The Palmetto State’s top three cocktails are:
- Manhattan – Rye, sweet vermouth, two dashes of Angostura, garnished with a brandied cherry.
- Bee’s Knees – Gin, lemon juice, and honey syrup.
- Martini – Gin and dry vermouth with a lemon twist or a few olives.
I’ve never had a Bee’s Knees so I’ll have to order one this weekend in celebration of National Cocktail Day. If you choose to partake as well, please drink responsibly. Cheers!
