Ready for 5 of the weirdest and scariest facts for August 18th? Yup, me too.

Weird facts are always for me. It’s August 18th people and I’m ready to get weird with you. Just like the days before and the ones to come, the history is weird, a little scary and we’ve got a list of them for you to enjoy.

Knowing major past events is important to understand how we live life today. Seeing what happened in the past fascinates me. You might think I’m weird, but I find history interesting because of the weird and scary things that happen. Here are 5 of the weirdest and scariest facts for August 18th.

• Weather for Everyone!

  On August 18th, 1926 the very first weather map was televised for the world to see. Could you imagine seeing for 1st time a map of the weather on your TV screen? You could start to actually plan for the future and not get stuck in a storm!

• It’s Helium Discovery Day

  Let the weirdest take flight into the sky with this fun August 18th fact. Today is annually known as helium discovery day. Helium Discovery Day celebrates the day that helium was first discovered. In the mid-19th century, scientists wanted to study the chemical composition of the sun and thought that a solar eclipse was necessary to do so. In 1868, French astronomer Pierre Jules César Janssen went to Guntoor, India, to see an eclipse in support of studying the sun's composition. On August 18, using a prism, he found a yellow light that appeared to be sodium but found out that it didn't hold the same wavelength as that element. It turns out what he had just discovered was in fact helium. Go celebrate by buying a beautiful helium balloon.

• Genghis Khan Died

  On August 18th, 1227 Genghis Khan died. This was soon after the submission of the Xi Xia. The exact cause of his death is unknown however many historians maintain that he fell off a horse while on a hunt, and died of fatigue and injuries. There is another theory though (less exciting) that Genghis Khan died of respiratory disease.

  This is an inspirational one. On August 18th, 2012 a French swimmer Philippe Croizon completed a swim to link five continents using custom-made flippers. The swimmer who lost all his limbs in an electrocution accident hoped his accomplishments would inspire other disabled people. "This was the hardest swim of my life, with a water temperature of four degrees Celsius (39 degrees Fahrenheit) and strong currents," he told AFP news agency. "We made it."

  It's important to always keep going, no matter what. That's why today is Never Give Up Day. Also known as International Never Give Up Day, this supportive holiday is observed on August 18th each year. It has been observed annually since August 18th of 2019.
