On the last day of August, I say, adieu my dear friend, and thanks for the good times. It’s August 31st and we’re ready to break out all the weirdness and embrace the mundane.

Just like the days before and the ones to come, the history is weird, a little scary and we’ve got a list of them for you to enjoy. Knowing major past events is important to understand how we live life today and I’ve got some rather freaky facts for you to explore.

Seeing what happened in the past fascinates me. You might think I’m weird, but I find history interesting because of the weird and scary things that happen. Here are 5 of the weirdest and scariest facts for August 31st.

• National Trail Mix Day

• Princess Diana Passes Away

  This makes me sad. On August 31st, 1997 Princess Diana passed away. Diana The Princess of Wales and her constant companion Dodi Fayed are killed in a car crash in Paris as was the driver Henri Paul who was drunk at the time, the driver was trying to escape from Paparazzi photographers. Diana was the Princess of Wales and she was in a terrible car crash in a road tunnel in Paris. Global attention and mourning were in full effect and over 2 billion people tuned in to her funeral which was held on September 6th.

• Jack the Ripper

  On August 31st, 1888 the body of Jack the Ripper's first victim, Mary Ann Nichols was found in Whitechapel in London's East End. She was working as a prostitute during this time. He targeted women of this profession. On November 7th Jack the Ripper took his fifth and last victim, Irish-born Mary Kelly, an occasional prostitute.
• South Korea Typhoon Rusa

  On August 31st, 2002 Typhoon Rusa strikes the South Korea peninsula leaving over 100 dead and the eastern port city of Kangnung nearly fully submerged, with water reaching the roofs of houses. The devastation was terrible leaving many homeless.

• Crash in 1999

  On August 31st, 1999 a Boeing 737 Flight 3142 belonging to Lineas Aereas Privadas Argentinas (Lapa) airlines crashed into Argentina's capital. This occurred shortly after take-off killing 69 of the 90 passengers and crew. The plane failed to get airborne which caused the crash.
