Three Carolina Men Have Drug Sentences Commuted By Biden
Three men from North and South Carolina have had their drug sentences commuted by President Joe Biden. The men are 3 of 75 people whose sentences were commuted today by the Biden administration.
Vincent Edward Kennedy is from Surfside Beach, SC. His conviction was for “conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute cocaine” along with money laundering. In 2014 Kennedy was sentenced to 15 years in prison and 10 years of supervised release. His sentence was reduced later however to be 5 months shorter. Kennedy is now scheduled to be released from prison on April 26, 2023. After that date, he will serve the remainder of his sentence in home confinement. He will still serve the 10 years of supervised release as well.
Christopher Gunter of Columbia, SC also had his sentence reduced. Gunter was convicted of the charges of “conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and to distribute 50 grams or more of cocaine base, 5 kilograms or more of cocaine, and 100 kilograms or more of marijuana; possession with intent to distribute a quantity of marijuana and a quantity of MDMA.” He was initially sentenced, in 2008, to 20 years in prison with 10 years of supervised release. He will now be released on August 24th and begin serving the supervised release.
Kelvin Beaufort of Charlotte was convicted in 2007 of “Conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute, and to distribute cocaine and cocaine base”. He was sentenced to 27 years in prison with 20 years of supervised release. His sentence was later reduced to 262 months. He will be released on April 26, 2023, to serve the remainder of his sentence in home confinement while leaving in tact his 20 years of supervised release.
The Biden Administration chose to commute sentences for individuals serving on drug-related, nonviolent convictions. They also will be starting job training and workforce re-entry programs for people released from prison.
