Two Teams, Two Languages
It’ll be a rematch of Super Bowl XXXIX when the Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots square off in this year’s big game. Before the coin toss and kick off at Super Bowl LII in Minneapolis on Sunday, February 4th, we should familiarize ourselves with the distinctly different dialects spoken by the fans of the two teams.
Philadelphia and Boston maintain strong cultural connections to England dating back to colonial times. However, some of the words one hears in those cities are so unique, it’s as though they’re not English at all. Let’s listen as others attempt to decipher what Eagles and Patriots fans might be saying in the the stands.
We’ll begin with my hometown. I grew up in the Philly area and I still have trouble with some of the slang.
I visited Boston once when I was college. I would have benefitted from hiring an interpreter.
