Life On The World’s Most Crowded Island
Charlotte is growing. It’s one of the fastest growing cities in America with no sign of slowing down anytime soon. But if you think Charlotte is crowded, think again. Our city has a long way to go to catch up to Santa Cruz del Islote, also known as the world’s most crowded island.
To say that the residents of this South American community live in close quarters is an understatement. Situated two hours off the coast of Colombia, Santa Cruz del Islote is home to over 1,200 people. The entire land area of the island is approximately the size of two soccer fields. That means this island is four times as dense as the island of Manhattan.
The good people of Santa Cruz del Islote make the most of their sparse space. Settled only 150 years ago, the island boasts two shops, one restaurant, and a school. Obviously, everyone knows one another, which is probably why they don’t need a police department, even if there were room for one.
What do you think? Could you tolerate that much neighborliness?
