No One Likes Singing The “Winter Blues”
Approximately 5% of people in the U.S. are diagnosed with seasonal affective disorder, a type of depression triggered by the change of seasons. But plenty of people feel some form of so-called “winter blues,” especially after the holidays are over and we still have at least two months of chilly, gray weather in front of us.
Here are some simple ways you can boost your happiness at home, at work, and at the gym:
- Don’t hibernate. It’s nice to light a fire and cozy up on the couch during the cold winter months but don’t isolate yourself. Crawl out of your cave to spend time with friends and do activities that you enjoy. We need to feed our social, intellectual, and creative needs.
- Let in the light. The more natural light you can get, the better. If you work in a windowless room, invest in a light therapy box. When all else fails, go outside for at least 30 minutes a day. This helps regulate hormones, such as melatonin, and neurotransmitters that affect mood and behavior.

- Get your sweat on. Staying physically active this time of year is very important. Again, 30 minutes a day is the magic number. Daily exercise any time of year increases the production of serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood and social behavior, as well as sleep, appetite, and memory, which contribute to a balanced mind and body.
- Try essential oils. A little aromatherapy can go a long way toward improving your state of mind, according to psychologist Dr. Barbara Nosal. Citrus scents will perk you up. Lavender can soothe your frazzled nerves.
