‘Breakthrough’ Bringing Miracle To Movie Theaters
One-third of the way through the trailer for Breakthrough, I knew it would be a major tearjerker. The upcoming film tells the story of a 14-year-old boy, John Smith, who falls into an icy Midwestern lake and, overcoming all odds of survival, recovers and walks out of the hospital sixteen days later under his own power. But was it only his own power?
Breakthrough is based on Joyce Smith’s 2017 book The Impossible: The Miraculous Story of a Mother’s Faith and Her Child’s Resurrection. Writing from a Christian perspective, Joyce Smith (top left) clearly considers her son’s healing to be a modern-day miracle.
The film stars Chrissy Metz (This Is Us) as Joyce Smith, and Topher Grace (That ’70s Show) playing the part of the Smith family’s pastor. Breakthrough opens in theaters on Wednesday, April 17, just in time for Easter.
