Should The Date For Halloween Be Changed?
Is nothing sacred anymore? For my entire life, Halloween has been on October 31st. Forget about me. It has always been on October 31st! Now some people would like to see that change.
The reason that Halloween is on October 31st is because of what comes on November 1st: All Saints’ Day or All Hallows’ Day, a holy day dedicated to remembering the dead. Halloween is more formally known as All Hallows’ Eve. But over the centuries, Halloween became more about costumes and candy than anything religious.
A change.org petition has resurfaced asking for the date of Halloween to be changed to the last Saturday of October. More than 100,000 people have signed it. I understand why people would want this to happen. Having your kids buzzed on sugar and up late on a Saturday is better than on a school night. Adults would also appreciate not having to go to work the next morning with a raging hangover.
I don’t know if Halloween-related sales ever suffer when the holiday falls on a Thursday, as it does this year, but one candy brand seems to be rooting for the date change. Snickers is pledging to give away 1 million candy bars if the government officially moves Halloween to the last Saturday in October. Whether it happens or not, this is good publicity for Snickers.
What do you say? Do you want the date of Halloween to change?
