For the past couple of months, Sara and I have been helping our oldest son wade through a swamp of college applications and financial aid forms. I'm happy to report that we've reached dry land. All we can do now is sit back and wait for the schools to make their decisions. But just as we've wrapped up that "invasive procedure," another is upon us: taxes.

Because Sara is self-employed and has a complex income/expense situation, we leave our annual tax preparation to a professional. I was never that good at math anyway. It turns out a lot of Americans wish they could avoid having to do their own tax returns.

According to a new One Poll survey, there are plenty of other unpleasant things people would rather experience than the pain of filing their taxes with the IRS by the April 15th deadline. Here are the top responses:

  • 46% - Lose an hour of sleep a night for a month
  • 36% - Get a bad haircut
  • 36% - Lose favorite sweater forever
  • 30% - Eat a bowl of insects
  • 28% - Give up chocolate for a year
  • 20% - Walk to work for a week

Dental work didn't make the list? I guess some things are still worse than taxes. What would you rather do instead of filing your return?
