Second Harvest Food Bank Expands Facility To Serve More Families
It’s unacceptable that, in a country as wealthy as the United States, hunger is still a problem. According to Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina, every day over 188,000 children in our region are at risk of going hungry. More than 41,000 senior citizens struggle to pay for food and medicine. And 20% of households served by food banks have a member who is a veteran.
Mel and I visited Second Harvest Food Bank in Charlotte for a tour of their recent facility expansion. Additional warehouse space and loading docks were needed to serve their 19-county territory. Three hundred pounds of food are distributed every minute that Second Harvest is open. Food Sourcing Manager David Brown showed us how donations are received, sorted, stored, and distributed. Did you know that Second Harvest also sends pet food to dozens of animal rescue organizations? It’s a complex, impressive, and effective operation.
Second Harvest wouldn’t be able to feed as many families as they do without the support of the community. Attending one of their annual fundraisers is a great way to join in the fight against hunger. The next big event benefiting Second Harvest will be Empty Bowls on March 20th at the Charlotte Convention Center. Money is raised through ticket sales and a silent auction.
Other ways that you can help include:
- Donating food. Non-perishables that are nutritious and high in protein, such as canned tuna, chicken, beans, fruits and vegetables are always needed. Consider organizing a food drive and work, school, or your place of worship.
- Giving money. While some of the food Second Harvest distributes is donated, much of it still has to be purchased. For every $1 donated, they can buy 7 pounds of food.
- Volunteering time. Individuals and groups can help sort items or pack food bags for school kids in need. Volunteer opportunities are available at the main warehouse, partner agencies, or at area schools.
We’re very grateful to David Brown and the entire Second Harvest team for the tour of their expanded facility and insight into the needs of our region. Here are a few photos from our visit:
