Mom Upset Daughter Had To Say Yes At School Dance And She Should Be
There’s a story that’s gone viral out of Utah and I understand why. Girls, teens, young women, women….we ALL have the right to say no to something that makes us uncomfortable. I’m shocked that in Utah, some schools have such ridiculous rules, especially in today’s culture.
Last week on Facebook, Alicia Hobson, the mom of a sixth-grade student in the Utah school district, posted about an incident that happened to her 11 year-old daughter at a school dance. Her daughter, Azlyn, came home from the dance extremely upset. She was made to dance with a boy that made her uncomfortable at the schools Valentine’s Day dance. She tried to say no thank you to the boy, but principal overheard and told her she’s not allowed to say no and that she had to dance with the boy.
Apparently, this school has a rule that no one can say “no” to anyone at a school dance. The principal of the school says he wants all students to feel included and welcomed. He also said that students are not allowed to say no because it would be rude. Seriously?
Hobson has a big problem with this school rule and I don’t blame her! The boy in question that asked her daughter to dance had made some previous sexual comments to her daughter which is why Azlyn felt uncomfortable around him. Again, these are 11 year-old kids! ANYONE should be able to say no! Sadly, many women have ended up in horrible situations because they’ve always been told not to be rude and not to say no.
Making someone do something that makes them uncomfortable is wrong. I get that the principal wants everyone to feel included, but saying “no” isn’t rude. EVERY kid needs to hear the word no. In life, they’ll hear that word numerous times. You cannot always get what you want and kids need to be ok with that.
It’s insane to me that a rule like this even exists at any school in our country. We should ALL be allowed to say no. I grew up with some a few girls that thought saying “no” was considered bad manners. They put themselves in a few situations that were not safe. This mom should be mad!
Read more below…this is the mom’s Facebook post about the incident. It’s freakin’ scary that girls/women are expected to yes to everything, even if it makes them uncomfortable. THIS shouldn’t happen! I’m all for this mom raising a stink!
