North Carolina 5th Grader’s Message In A Bottle Makes It To Morocco
Vivian Byerly, a rising fifth grader at Greensboro Day School, put a message in a bottle while participating in ‘Pirate Day’ with her third grade class in 2019. According to Daily Mail, the messages were taken on a boat participating in the annual Reelin’ For Research fishing tournament and dropped into the Gulf Stream, approximately sixty miles off the North Carolina coast.
Fifteen months later, Vivian’s bottle was found by a fisherman more than 4,000 miles away. Her letter had traveled all the way to Morocco in North Africa. The fisherman wasn’t proficient in English so he had his nephew translate the message and the two quickly emailed Vivian’s teacher, Susan Ferguson. Vivian and the fisherman’s family have stayed in contact.
So what did Vivian write in her message in a bottle? “Be strong because things will get better. It may be storming now but it never rains forever.” That’s something that would resonate with a fisherman. Vivian added, “If you get this message please write back.” And it worked!
