Pediatrician’s Toilet Paper Roll Hack Can Help Prevent Choking Hazards
Just when you think social media is nothing but a vast wasteland of prank videos and conspiracy theories, along comes a hack that could save young lives. If you’re a parent, you know that young kids will put pretty much anything in their mouths. I can recall one of my sons swallowing a nickel. Fortunately, it reappeared without incident. But choking is a leading cause of death in children under four years old so it’s important for parents to be vigilant, especially when it comes to toys.
How can you tell if your kid’s toy is a choking hazard? A pediatrician in Ohio has a simple way to find out if something is a risk. In a TikTok video, Dr. Nkeiruka Orajiaka shows her easy hack that uses the cardboard tube from a toilet paper roll to check if a toy is too small for kids under three. You simply try to drop the item into the tube. The doctor explains, “Anything that passes through the tube means it can go into their mouth and they can swallow it.” But she told Today that it’s not fool-proof and caregivers need to watch out for toys with batteries or small pieces that can come off.
