Survey: Having An Excuse Can Get You Out Of A Speeding Ticket
It’s a horrible feeling. You’re cruising down the highway, singing along with your favorite song, and suddenly you see the flashing lights in your rear-view mirror. You’re getting pulled over. Been there, done that. A couple of times.
Nobody likes getting a speeding ticket, and while some police officers will never be persuaded to forgive your lead foot, some people have been able to talk their way out of those fines. How did they do it? A new survey by CarInsurance.com reveals that almost 50% of people were successful in getting out of a speeding ticket by using an excuse. Some of the most successful excuses were:
- I didn’t know I was speeding (26%)
- Medical emergency (25%)
- Everyone else was going the same speed (22%)
- Late for work (21%)
- I had to use the bathroom (20%)
You can see more of those successful excuses HERE. If none of them seem to work for you, another good way to get out of a ticket is to ask for a warning. In fact, 36% of people this year said they asked for a warning, and almost half of those got one. Those stats used to be better, with 48% of people asking for a warning and getting out of tickets in 2019 and 2020.
If you still wind up getting that ticket, you can still get out of paying if you fight it. The survey finds 28% of respondents appealed their speeding ticket in 2021, with most of those people being successful in court. However, your safest bet is to drive closer to the posted speed limit.
