Theme Park Will Feature Life-Size ‘Titanic’ Replica
If you’re a nautical history buff, or simply a fan of the movie Titanic, your “heart will go on” with this news. A life-sized replica of the ill-fated passenger ship is currently under construction in China.
Funding the massive undertaking is investor Su Shaojun, who’s also a fan of the ship, the lore, and the James Cameron film. DW reports that the Titanic replica will serve as a tribute to the ship, a museum, and – for just over $300 – guests will be able to spend the night aboard.
The project has been met with some criticism. When Su Shaojun met with the British Titanic Society in 2017, some members said the project was in poor taste and that it was insensitive to turn a tragedy into an amusement park attraction. The BBC reported that the original plan for the Chinese attraction included a simulated iceberg crash. Thankfully, that idea was scrapped.
The Titanic replica will be the centerpiece of the Romandisea theme park in China’s Sichuan province. Construction on the 850-foot-long ship began six years ago, and it was scheduled to be finished in 2019, but is just nearing completion now. You can see some photos HERE. It’s set to open to the public soon, but there’s something you should know before you book your visit. The theme park’s tour buses will be playing Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” on a loop.
If China is a little too far away for you, a similar but smaller Titanic-themed museum has been in Pigeon Forge, TN since 2010. It was built to half-scale of the original ship and sits in a pool to create the illusion of being at sea.
