CMPD Opens First De-Escalation Training Facility In Southeastern U.S.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has announced the opening of its new De-Escalation Training Facility at the CMPD Academy. This state-of-the-art resource is the first of its kind in the Southeast and one of the few multi-story de-escalation training centers in the nation.
According to the CMPD media release, the 3,400 square-foot facility is equipped with cutting edge technical capabilities to create unique scenarios for each student. Twenty-eight cameras provide instructors and students with a comprehensive view of the training exercises.
Police academy recruits participate in more than 60 hours of de-escalation training. Additionally, all CMPD officers receive further de-escalation training every year. The goal is to improve communication, reduce volatile circumstances, increase voluntary compliance, and protect human lives.
Construction of the $2.4 million De-Escalation Training Facility was funded in partnership with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Foundation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. You can see video of a training session HERE.
