Research Suggests Skateboarding As Remedy For Midlife Crisis
A new study suggests that skateboarding can help depressed Gen Xers and even those battling substance abuse issues by boosting their moods and allowing them to loosen up. Never mind the risk of shattered shins and cracked coccyxes.
According to the New York Post, research has revealed that hopping on a skateboard allows middle-aged people to cope with depression and stress, while also offering a potential common ground for parents and their kids. Sociological researcher Dr. Paul O’Connor, from the University of Exeter, says skateboarding can also provide a new pathway of self-expression, which is something that often fades for adults and parents.
A skateboard is a lot cheaper than a sports car, so I can see how it might be an appealing answer to the proverbial midlife crisis. As a teenager, I spent a lot of time on a skateboard. Had I kept at it, I might still be doing it today. After all, Tony Hawk is still riding half-pipes in his 50s. But I don’t see myself starting over now. I have a dog to walk every day.
