Guy Made TikTok Showing Switzerland, Labeled It Gastonia & Florida Woman Drove There
You can’t believe everything you read and see on the internet. A Florida woman found that out the hard way! A guy on TikTok posted a video of Lauterbrunnen, a town in Switzerland, and labeled it Gastonia, North Carolina. A woman from Florida believed it and made a road trip to Gastonia with her family. And of course found out that Gastonia looks nothing like Switzerland.
Now I like Gastonia. I was born there and I still live there. Some of the nicest people you’ll meet are in Gaston County. That being said, the jokes about G-town have been around for a long time. And most of us that live here giggle at the jokes. Since I was a kid, Gastonia has grown a lot and I enjoy living here.
In case you’ve never been to Gastonia, it in no way resembles Switzerland. Not even with snow on the ground! But that’s what one Florida woman believed. A guy named Zachary Keesee posts mislabeled videos on TikTok. According to the Charlotte Observer, Keesee became inspired to post these types of videos after a friend went skiing in the Rockies and posted a picture of his trip on social media with the caption, “I love skiing in Boone.”
Keesee, who’s 22 years-old, posts videos from different places he’s traveled to over the years. He took a video of the Duomo di Milano Cathedral in Milan, Italy and labeled it “Concord Mills Mall, North Carolina.” Another one of his videos shows Venice, Italy and it’s labeled “Raleigh, N.C.” Obviously the kid’s a prankster but there are many that think his videos are accurate.
Olivia Garcia is one of those people. She was on a road trip with her family to the Carolinas from Jupiter, Florida. The family was driving to Angel Oak Park in Charleston, S.C. and Garcia saw Keesee’s “Gastonia” video. She convinced her family to make a detour to Gastonia because she was mesmerized by the gorgeous mountains in the video.
Garcia told the Charlotte Observer, “I had never heard of Gastonia before but the name sounded like something out of a Disney movie.” HA! Once Garcia and her family got to Gastonia, they realized within 20 minutes that something was off and that the town in the video was not the town they were seeing.
Now, I don’t know why Ms. Garcia didn’t Google Gastonia after seeing the TikTok video. I mean, if I’m gonna alter my road trip plan, I’m going to take a few minutes and do some research. But that’s me. Next time this family takes a trip I guarantee you they’ll do a bit of Googling first.
