Lizzo Says Her Upcoming Album Will Be Anything But ‘Typical’
Lizzo is discussing her new music and why fans shouldn’t expect anything “typical” from her upcoming album, as well as how she’s creating positive change within the music industry and the world.
After teasing two new songs “Special” and “If You Love Me” in recent TV commercials for Logitech and Google Pixel, Lizzo fans are expecting new music coming soon. For PEOPLE‘s latest cover story, the “Truth Hurts” singer told the magazine, “As you can see, we are not following the rules of how albums are supposed to come out.”

“The way that people fell in love with me was just by finding me whether it was a scene in a movie, or a commercial, or my social media,” the artist continued. “And I think we’re just going to stay following the Lizzo rules because that’s what works for me. I think a lot of people wouldn’t put two major commercials out within a week of each other with snippets of songs that no one’s heard before without a way to access them or stream them, but we did because this is a new world!”
“I think my music is about to start coming out and it’s amazing and exciting to see people’s reactions to it. Just, don’t expect anything typical.” As for the music, Lizzo, 33, says it will be “a little… happier? It is the person I was trying to be on the first album — she’s very confident.”
Later in the issue, Lizzo went on to say, “I deserve the spotlight. I deserve the attention. I’m talented, I’m young, I’m hot. You know? And I’ve worked hard.”
When it comes to her body constantly becoming a topic of conversation, Lizzo said with a sigh, “Okay, we all know I’m fat. I know I’m fat. It doesn’t bother me. I like being fat, and I’m beautiful and I’m healthy. So can we move on?” She went on to list the stereotypes bigger women like her face: “The funny, fat friend. I played that trope in high school. Or the friend who is gonna beat your a– ’cause she’s big. Or it’s the big girl who’s insecure ’cause she’s big. I don’t think I’m the only kind of fat girl there is. I want us to be freed from that box we’ve been put in.”
“I think I have a really hot body! I’m a body icon, and I’m embracing that more and more every day,” she continued. “It may not be one person’s ideal body type just like, say, Kim Kardashian might not be someone’s ideal, but she’s a body icon and has created a modern-day beauty standard. And what I’m doing is stepping into my confidence and my power to create my own beauty standard. And one day that will just be the standard.”
