Viewers Are Divided About Toddlers Running Errands On Netflix Show
How old should children be before they can be sent out to run errands on their own? That’s the debate being raised by a Japanese reality TV show currently streaming on Netflix.
According to Fox News, “Old Enough!” features children between the ages of two and five going out into the world on their own to complete various tasks for their parents. Sometimes the kids are making quick trips to the grocery store. Others are shown traveling to and from school on their own, crossing busy streets to get there.
“Old Enough!” has aired on Nippon Television since 1991. Netflix recently began streaming 20 episodes from the 2013 season. Many U.S. viewers have found the show to be delightful. But some have said they can’t see themselves allowing their pre-schoolers or kindergartners to take on such challenging tasks alone.
I remember being sent to the store by my mother when I was in elementary school, but not as young as five-years-old. As shocking as this reality show may seem, it helps to remember that the children are being monitored by a camera crew the entire time. “Old Enough!” may also say something about the Japanese people and their respect for children. I’m not sure you could make this show in the U.S.
Old Enough is the most wholesome show you’ve ever seen — in this unscripted series, Japanese toddlers (ages 2-5) are sent on simple errands to help their parents and the results are just so pure.
