Has A Great Idea Ever Come To You In A Dream?
Inspiration can happen when we least expect it. You can’t predict when a brilliant idea will bubble up in your head. That’s why I keep a pad and pen on my bedside table. If I ever wake up in the middle of the night with a jolt of inspiration, I can write it down before I forget what it was. Usually, it’s just a funny dream involving an encounter with a random celebrity but, hey, it could make a good story for the radio show.
Have you ever had a great idea come to you in a dream? Ideally, it would be something that could bring you fame and fortune, like an idea for a blockbuster movie or, say, a hit song. That’s what Journey keyboardist Jonathan Cain says happened to him just over forty years ago.
Jonathan Cain, who often credits his faith for his success, says the inspiration to write one of Journey’s most beloved hits came to him while he was asleep. In 2016, he told Songfacts that he woke up on the band’s tour bus in upstate New York and saw that he had written “Highway run into the midnight sun” on a napkin. That’s the opening line of “Faithfully.”
Cain said, after that, the rest of “Faithfully” came together in about 30 minutes. He referred to it as a “supernatural download.” Journey recorded the power ballad in 1982 for the Frontiers album and released it as a single in 1983. “Faithfully” reached no. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. It remains one of Journey’s signature songs.
So the next time you feel like you might fall asleep, make sure you have something to write with and on nearby, even if it’s just a napkin. You never know when a million dollar idea could pop up!
