Good Luck Finding A Gift For Dad This Father’s Day
With Father’s Day coming up on Sunday, June 18th, it’s time to take care of any last-minute presents you need for the dads in your life. Good luck with that! According to Express, a new Father’s Day survey from OnePoll finds that 38% of adults who shop for gifts say dear old dad is their biggest gift-giving challenge.
Why Is This So Hard?
The survey reveals that the problem may boil down to one simple reason. Nearly half of respondents say that when they ask their dad what he’d like, he always says the same thing: “I don’t need anything.” And when you reach a certain age, that’s true. But that’s not the answer your family wants to hear.
Other less-than-useful phrases dads offer when asked what they want include, “save your money for something else” and “I don’t know.” As a dad, myself, I can confirm this to be true. I’ve given all three of those answers when asked what I would like for Father’s Day, and even my birthday.
I think one of the reasons why dads can be so evasive in answering questions about gifts is that we don’t want or feel that we need to be the center of attention. However, this ambivalence is probably why dads end up getting stereotypical Father’s Day presents like socks, craft beer, and aftershave. At least ties aren’t on the list!
What Does Dad Really Want?
About two-thirds (65%) of survey respondents say they’d like to get their dad something “more inspired,” but they have no clue what that should be. The dads polled say the top gifts they really want for Father’s Day include a meal in a restaurant, a nice bottle of wine, a good book, tickets to a sporting event, tech gifts, an all-inclusive vacation, or fan gear from their favorite team. Oddly enough, craft beer and aftershave also made the top ten, but not socks.
I like the idea of going out to eat, taking a trip somewhere, or tickets to a ballgame or concert. However, I have no idea what to get for my father.
