Japanese Company Promoting New Device For Napping At Work
We’ve all felt like napping at work, but if we did, we’d be out of work. Very few bosses, if any, look kindly upon employees lying down on the job. George Costanza had a secret napping cubby built under his desk on Seinfeld, but that eventually backfired on him. What if you didn’t have to lie down at all?
According to Japan Today, the Koyoju Plywood Corporation has unveiled a new type of sleeping pod that employees can use for naps at work or even coffee shops. It’s called “Giraffenap” because the vertical pod allows you to sleep upright, like the long-necked animal it’s named after. The ventilated pod contains a series of platforms for your feet, knees, and butt while blocking out noise from the outside.
Koyoju Plywood Corporation already has a promotional video (below) and sales pitch for their invention. They invite potential customers to “Take a nap while standing and recover your mind and body in a short time.” The company recommends a nap time of no more than 20-30 minutes so it doesn’t interfere with sleeping at night. This is strictly for power naps.
While we don’t know what “Giraffenap” will cost yet, they should go on sale by late December or early January. The company hopes to put the pods in both workplaces and cafes all around Japan. If you’ve ever wanted to grab a vertical nap in something the size of a phone booth, this could just what you need. If you’re already feeling claustrophobic just thinking about, you may want to keep looking for something else.
