South Carolina & These States Allow Powerball Winners To Stay Anonymous

Have you been playing Powerball with these astronomical jackpots? How many tickets do you buy for one drawing? And have you thought about how your life would change if you actually won the whole thing? Depending on where you live, you might not be able keep it on the down low.

The Powerball jackpot is up to $1.73 billion for Wednesday night’s (10/11) drawing. That’s the second biggest U.S. lottery jackpot ever. According to USA Today, if someone hits the jackpot, they can collect their winnings anonymously if they live in a state which allows that.

There are 10 states that allow lottery winners of any prize size to remain anonymous. South Carolina is one of them. North Carolina is not. The states that do allow anonymity are Delaware, Kansas, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, North Dakota, South Carolina, and Wyoming.

Other states allow lottery winners to remain anonymous depending on the value of the jackpot. For example, in Minnesota, a prize must be over $10,000 for someone to remain anonymous. In Arizona, a prize must be over $100,000 for someone to remain anonymous. Georgia and Illinois require prizes to be over $250,000 for someone to remain anonymous. Meanwhile, Texas and West Virginia require prizes to be over $1 million for someone to remain anonymous, and Virginia requires a prize to be greater than $10 million.

It’s something to think about. Once you win a crazy amount of money, everyone and their mother will be coming out of the woodwork with their hand out. No matter where you live, make sure you get a lawyer and financial advisor to help you protect your winnings.
