Olivia Rodrigo has done what we have all feared while online stalking an ex: she left proof! The Grammy-winning singer-songwriter appeared on Thursday’s (December 7) The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon where she revealed she accidentally followed her ex-boyfriend on Instagram when checking up on his page. The “vampire” signer, 20, tells host Fallon that she had a “very embarrassing encounter” as she was stalking her ex, “as one does.” It turns out that Rodrigo hit the follow button, which is a bigger deal than one would think.
Her accidental follow became all the more noticeable as Rodrigo doesn’t follow anyone on Instagram, a decision she said she made a long time ago to help her stay off social media. “I was just following one person, so it was super obvious that I was following him,” she said. To make matters worse, the singer didn’t notice at first. It wasn’t until her friends ran into the room, questioning her in a panic, “Did you mean to follow him? Unfollow him!” In the moment of panic, things went from bad to worse when Rodrigo rushed to hit “unfollow,” and her phone died the second she opened the Instagram app. She recalled, “I couldn’t find a charger, so I was just following my ex for a while.” Hilariously enough, her fans believed she was hacked because of the strange follow. Olivia ran with it saying, “Yeah, you guys be safe! Get your two-factor authentication, you guys.”
Rodrigo won’t be making that mistake ever again — and it’s not because she won’t be stalking anymore. Instead, the rising pop star reveals she has a finsta now, so she can freely “lurk and be curious” as she pleases, with no embarrassing repercussions. Watch her interview below:
