Charming North Carolina Town Makes Best Christmas Destinations List
Planning your Christmas getaway? Travel+Leisure recently issued their list of the 20 best places to visit for Christmas. And, to nobody’s surprise, a charming spot in the North Carolina mountains landed on the list. Let’s find out more about it and what attracts visitors for the holidays.
Best Places To Visit At Christmas
Travel+Leisure’s list has a little something for all tastes, whether you prefer the sun and sand or the cozy cabin in the mountains by a fire. And, that’s where we find Highlands, North Carolina. Situated in the southern Appalachian Mountains, Highlands is what Hallmark imagines when they produce their fairytale movies.
Although many areas of North Carolina were devastated by the recent hurricane, I see that Highlands is open and accessible. However, it’s always a good idea to check drivenc.gov for updates and closures. But, it’s no wonder Highlands wound up on the list of best places to visit at Christmas.
Visitors love the scenic beauty, the climate, and the number of historic churches and inns. It’s one of the highest cities east of the Mississippi with an elevation of over 4100 feet.
A number of activities take place throughout the holidays. There’s ice skating in the park as well as ‘Light Up The Night With Santa,’ which takes place November 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Kelsey-Hutchinson Founders Park. Just like in those movies, crowds gather in the dark park sharing candy canes and hot chocolate singing carols. Then Santa arrives, and, the park magically lights up.
What could be better to kick off the Christmas season? And, as far as lodging, there are plenty of charming spots in the Highlands to make your visit special. But, the most well-known and probably most popular is Old Edwards Inn and Spa on Main Street.
So, get packing and plan your getaway to one of the best places to visit at Christmas!
