7 Waterfalls Worth The Walk
My family enjoys hiking in the mountains of North and South Carolina. Well, my wife and I enjoy it. We hope our sons will come around one day. Until then, they’ll just keep referring to our hikes as “death marches.” It’s tough to be a teenager.
The boys do have a point, though, that hikes are more satisfying when there’s a specific destination. They’d prefer it to be an ice cream shop or burger joint, but a dramatic waterfall is a pretty good runner-up.
Did you know that the tallest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains is in Western North Carolina? Upper Whitewater Falls in the Nantahala National Forest drops 411 feet. In fact, the Carolinas have a wealth of waterfalls waiting to be explored. Here’s a list to help you plan your family’s next hike:
Dry Falls (Nantahala National Forest, NC)
High Shoals Falls (South Mountain State Park, NC)
Looking Glass Falls (Pisgah National Forest, NC)
