What Should Charlotte’s (Possible) MLS Team Be Called?
The bid is in! Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper has formally applied to Major League Soccer (MLS) for an expansion team in Charlotte. St. Louis, Sacramento, and Las Vegas are also in the running.
Mr. Tepper has been very aggressive about getting a team, going so far as to already hire a team president with professional soccer experience. That’s before laying out a potential expansion fee which could be as high as $200 million. Tepper’s goal is to have a deal done by the end of 2019.
Let’s say Charlotte is chosen to have an MLS franchise. What should the team be called? It should be something that makes sense for the city or region. We currently have a pro soccer team called the Independence, which hearkens back to Charlotte’s rebellious colonial days. But what are some other possibilities? Here are a few ideas:
1. Charlotte Jam – To commemorate our competitive traffic.
2. QCFC – Queen City Football Club. Or it could refer to all the good Fried Chicken in Charlotte. Drumsticks on the jerseys?
3. Charlotte Orange Slices – You can’t have a soccer match without them.
4. Carolina ‘Cue – Is anyone else getting hungry?
5. South Park Soccer Moms – Okay, maybe not for a men’s team.
6. Charlotte Davedogs – Bob Johnson had the Bobcats, so why not? Oh. Right.
