This North Carolina City Has Some Of America’s Best Drivers
A lot of people think they’re good drivers. High self-esteem is important but it doesn’t always line up with reality. I still remember the words of wisdom my father imparted to me when I was a teenager learning how to drive: “Assume everyone else on the road is crazy.”
Of course, there are good and bad drivers all over America, and a new report shows where to find them. Clever Move compared the 50 metros with the largest populations in the U.S. using eight metrics, including average annual traffic fatalities, days of precipitation per year, percentage of uninsured drivers in the state, and Allstate’s best drivers ranking.
Let’s start with the bad news. Based on the research, Jacksonville, Florida is home to the worst drivers in the nation. They have the highest number of alcohol-related driving deaths, 2.9 per 100,000 residents, which is 66% more than the average city in the study. Florida is actually the worst state overall for drivers, with Jacksonville, Orlando, and Tampa all in the top five for worst drivers.
Tennessee has two cities, Nashville and Memphis, in the top ten for worst drivers. Memphis appears to be an especially dangerous place with 13.3 fatal accidents per 100,00 residents each year. That’s two times more than the U.S. average.
On the flip side, New York City is where you’ll find America’s best drivers. Surprised? I guess if you can drive there, you can drive anywhere. According to the study, the Big Apple has the fewest drunk driving deaths and the second-fewest driving fatalities per year.
One North Carolina city also ranks high for good driving. Raleigh landed at number 8 on the list of cities with the best drivers in 2023. You can see both lists, the good and the bad, below:
