South Carolina Schools Closed Through Rest Of Academic Year
Parents, students, teachers, and school staff members are wondering how long schools will be closed due to coronavirus concerns. That question was answered in South Carolina on Wednesday (4/22/20) when Gov. Henry McMaster and Education Superintendent Molly Spearman announced that the state’s schools will stay closed for the remainder of the academic year.
According to WLTX-TV in Columbia, online instruction will continue until the scheduled end of the school year. Depending on the school, that will be in late May or early June. In the announcement, Gov. McMaster gave school districts flexibility for students who need special needs instruction and for some summer school programs. He also encouraged school leaders to explore ways of holding graduation ceremonies.
Superintendent Spearman added that there would be opportunities for some people to pick up and drop off materials during the last two weeks of the school year. One-on-one parent-teacher meetings might even be possible under proper social distancing guidelines.
Ms. Spearman said she didn’t expect any teacher layoffs and that the state’s goal is to retain all instructors. Neither Spearman nor Gov. McMaster was sure about the status of school sports. You can read more here.
