Have You Been Storing Some Food Incorrectly?

I cook a lot at home and thought I knew what I was doing in the kitchen. It turns out that I, and probably a lot of other people, have been making some big mistakes when it comes to storing food.
According to Food & Wine, there are certain foods that might be in your pantry right now that would be better off in the refrigerator or freezer. Here’s what some of the America’s top chefs say should not be stored in the pantry:
- Nuts should be stored in the freezer or refrigerator due to moisture that could cause fungus.
- Maple syrup could also grow fungus so you should stick it in the fridge.
- Bread, cold-pressed oils, chocolate, and peanut butter will all last longer if refrigerated.
- Mustard will keep its flavor longer in the fridge.
- Cured meats such as hard Italian salami are safer when wrapped in butcher paper and refrigerated.
- Garlic-infused olive oil contains botulism so definitely should be put in the refrigerator.
- Fish sauce is better in the fridge because if it spills in the pantry, you’re never getting rid of that smell.
- And believe it or not, chocolate chip cookies should be stored in the freezer or refrigerator. Unless you’re eating them right out of the oven, the freezer is the way to go. We’ve been freezing our cookies for years and will never eat them any other way again.
