A Charlotte man is being praised for having a big heart for some little birds. According to WCNC-TV, Mike Plumides was driving in the Quail Hollow area last week when he saw a distressed duck circling a storm drain. He pulled over to see what was troubling her and realized her ducklings must be trapped down in the drain.

Plumides wanted to help, but had trouble lifting the heavy iron grate, so he flagged down another man to help him. Once that was off, Mike was able to lower himself down and found there were seven ducklings huddled together in the corner. Luckily, there hadn’t been much rain in the area at the time, so it was pretty dry down there and he was able to begin the rescue operation.

The ducklings weren’t sure what to make of their hero at first. They were scared and would jump out of Mike’s hands. Eventually, he was able to pick them all up and set them one by one on the grass near the drain. As soon as a few of her babies were back, the mama duck calmed down. When they were all up, they waddled away. Plumides says the experience brought happy tears to his eyes.

Kathy Rowan was out for a walk in the neighborhood when she came upon the scene shortly after Plumides pulled over. She was able to record the good Samaritan at work and share the video:
